Gulu Police Fire Tear Gas To Disperse Students’ Protest

Ivan Tolit-Police in Gulu this morning fired tear gas to disperse a protest by students of Gulu College of Health Sciences leaving five of them unconscious.

The three female and two male students were rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Emergency Unit.

Trouble started when students numbering over 300 stormed the main campus located opposite the Gulu Court Circuit demanding for the resignation of the principal accusing her of failing to address their complaints which include poor management and high tuition fees.

This is the third strike the students are holding over the decision in June 2021 by the school to increase tuition fees from 2,077, 000 shillings to 2.5million shillings for private sponsored students and 1.270,000 shillings to 1.470,000 shillings for government sponsored students.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region spokesperson said they intervened after school authorities informed them that the students were planning to burn down the school.

Mudong said they were forced to fire tear gas after students started pelting stones at police adding that the school has been closed for now.

Jean Babalanda, the Principle Gulu College of Health Sciences said they were forced to close the school as students refused to enter class.
